Storage

Storage at VYN IT is the space where files, databases and virtual machines sit, plus how full it is and who can see which share. We do not expand blindly when permissions, old data and the backup have to be settled first.

Storage at VYN IT is the space where files, databases and virtual machines sit, plus how full it is and who can see which share. We do not expand blindly when permissions, old data and the backup have to be settled first.

Local disks, a NAS or shares in Microsoft 365 are different things. What the business opens every day gets a capacity warning someone sees before the application stops. The backup of that storage does not sit on it.

What we do

  • Shares and permissions

Folders that match the work, with groups instead of one-off exceptions nobody can explain.

  • Capacity

Free space, growth and the point at which a disk or a volume is expanded or cleaned up.

  • Storage for virtual machines

Latency and redundancy of the disks the hosts run on. Full datastores are an outage risk.

  • Clean up before you buy

Duplicate data, old profiles and backups sitting on the production disk are named before new hardware is ordered.

  • Replacing failed disks

In a window, knowing whether the RAID or the volume can still tolerate a failure.

Technologies and solutions

  • Server disks and RAID

Disk health, not only the light on the case. A degraded array is not normal.

  • NAS and shares

Where a full server would be too much and the application can live on a file share.

  • Microsoft 365

OneDrive and SharePoint when files are kept there and not also, unchecked, on the server.

  • Virtualization storage

Datastore, volume or pool, with free space in monitoring.

  • Backup target

A different device from the storage it protects.

What you gain

  • Filling up is visible

Before the database or the backup fails.

  • Permissions can be explained

New staff get a group, not a grown list of individual rights.

  • Buying follows need

Clean up and measure first, then disks. Not the other way around.

  • The copy sits elsewhere

A disk failure does not take the backup with it.

Typical problems

  • Ninety percent full

For weeks. Backup no longer writes, and the application slows down.

  • Everyone sees everything

The share is open to “everyone” because otherwise a scanner cannot save.

  • RAID treated as backup

A deleted file is deleted on every disk.

  • Two places, no leading copy

    Server and cloud disagree.

How we work

  1. 1

    Advice

We measure free space, permissions and what the application really needs.

  2. 2

    Planning

Clean up, expand or move, plus the backup target.

  3. 3

    Implementation

The change is in a window, with a test of the share and the business software.

  4. 4

    Optimization

Old permissions and full volumes are followed up.

  5. 5

    Ongoing care

Free space and disk health stay in monitoring on business days.

Frequently asked questions

Is RAID a backup?

No. RAID helps when a disk fails. A deleted or encrypted file is gone on every disk. That needs a copy somewhere else.

Are the disks still enough?

We say so from free space and growth, not from a feeling. A threshold in monitoring belongs with it.

Should files move to the cloud?

When the workplaces work there and the permissions are right. Not as a second unkept copy beside the file server.

Can you save a full disk without new hardware?

Often by removing old data, duplicates and backups that should not sit there. If the application honestly needs the space, we expand.

Who notices when storage fills up?

Monitoring, read Monday to Friday. Not the phone call when nobody can save anymore.
